Baseball and Richmond: a History of the Professional Game

The event is to assist in further providing both historical and educational programming to increase awareness of the historical site. Scott Mayer, the associate director of college counseling at St. Christopher’s School and co-author, along with the late W. Harrison Daniel, of the book "Baseball and Richmond: a History of the Professional Game 1883-2000" will be presenting a lecture. Richmond has a long and rich history with the national pastime with its roots tracing back to 1866 when the first organized clubs took the field. Topics include the origins of the game itself and the shift from amateurism to professionalism, the role of Civil War and Reconstruction in helping to give the game a national appeal, a discussion of the past locations of Richmond’s professional baseball fields and the evolution of the modern game and the relationships between the major and minor leagues. The presentation will have a relaxed conversational approach with plenty of discussion and question and answer time.
