Re: “Executive Director Lisa Freiman Out at ICA

"Firing on all cylinders" - interesting choice of words for a director who did everything she could to run this project into the ground. Let's be clear, the delays in construction were certainly not her fault, but on her BEST days, Lisa Freiman was divisive and petty. Bring back Joe Seipel (if he's not enjoying his forced retirement too much) as interim director to help repair burnt bridges and get this thing back on track. Let's not pretend someone quit a prestigious job right before the opening of the institute she was hired to usher into existence. Put simply, bravo to VCU for having the guts to fix their mistakes, even if it's at the eleventh hour and they are trying to couch it as a pleasant parting of ways.

Re: “Lower-Income Housing Options Are Headed for Richmond Neighborhoods

On the surface, The Better Housing Coalition seems like a great organization with altruistic goals and it started out as just that. But when you get into the details, it has partly become a mechanism for large corporate development that is wrapped in the pretty paper of a non-profit. In addition to affordable housing, they are putting up market rate housing as well as retail space mixed in with affordable housing all under federal tax credits.

If you also talk to some of the people the BHC serves you get a less than sterling review of their services. I had a friend who rented an apartment from them and could not get out of a lease without paying one month's rent and forfeiting his deposit even after they found someone to rent his unit. Not only could he not afford the space any longer due to medical bills and other expenses, but he also had to go back home to Pennsylvania and take care of his ailing mother. When he said he couldn't afford to pay them, the property manager threatened him with legal action.

This is not to say that BHC does not do good thing or hasn't done wonderful things, but "non-profit" has become a camouflage for power brokers, profit, industry and development on the tax payer's dime and it is rarely looked at with a critical eye.

Re: “After These Messages

Here's the punch line. The Martin Agency doesn't need John Norman. With the help of Style Weelky, the guys comes off looking like a tool. "They're trying to own families." Yeah, I'm sure Wal-Mart loves that line!
