Authors Sue Bailey and Carmen Flowers explain the finer points of funerals at the Fountain Bookstore

People think ahead for birthdays, bat mitzvahs and weddings, but rarely do they put a great deal of planning into their funerals. Making such decisions isn't exactly what some would call an uplifting experience. Some might even ask what's the point; you're not going to be there. For authors Sue Bailey and Carmen Flowers, however, death is the perfect excuse to throw the shindig of your life. In their collaborative handbook, “Grave Expectations: Planning the End Like There's No Tomorrow,” these two women take a humorous and poignant look at memorial services, filling their pages with first-person accounts and creative suggestions from farewell music to party favors. Whether being buried in a biodegradable casket or having your ashes blown out of a cannon like Hunter S. Thompson, ideas from Bailey and Flowers will make life's finality a little more pleasant. They discuss their work at Fountain Bookstore at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. Free. 788-1594. — Mike Hilleary
