Re: “On With the Show

On second read, I realize that there were negative comments directed at more than one theatre. While CAT may have been treated most harshly and my underlying points remain, I stand corrected and should have read more carefully before posting!

Re: “On With the Show

It is sad that the only negative things said in this article were directed at CAT. While the other theaters' summaries are neutral or positive, CAT is said to be a "neighborhood troupe reaching for broader appeal," which I read as mildly condescending. Moreover, the authors state that CAT's production quality has been "highly variable" and that CAT may outgrow its "kittenish reputation."

While the authors are certainly entitled to their opinions on the quality of CAT shows (although such opinions would hold more water if Style critics actually saw a majority of CAT shows), this article was not presented as an opinion piece but more as fact. That the article would choose to include negative descriptions of only one theater is disappointing.

Last season, CAT had nearly 600 subscribers and regularly sold out a 150-seat house. Next to Barksdale, CAT has been around longer than any other theater listed -- nearly 50 years. Audiences must believe CAT is doing something right - maybe Style would have done a better service to its readers by discussing CAT's appeal (as they did with all the other theaters) rather than focusing on the reporters' own low opinion.
