All Beer Coolers, Corn Dogs and Sexy Art

Sept. 1 is the start of the Labor Day weekend if you think about it (which you should do now, because you probably won't be thinking by the end of it). But it's also the start of the fall First Fridays season with the kids back and all. Being a freedom-loving American, you'll dutifully immerse yourself in the slow current of highway traffic, but before you do, you might check out the current on Broad Street Friday night from 7 to 10. Because you'll see things that you'll want to raise a can to later on some beach — things like Sue Papa's ceramic sculptures (which look like sex toys designed by Dr. Seuss) at 1708 Gallery (643-1708) or Kevin Blow's life-size alternative-lifestyle paper dolls at Outré Gallery (644-2129), auctioned to benefit Gay Pride Virginia. Then take to the clogged highway and munch a corn dog in celebration of a country that encourages all these things in one long, sandy weekend.
