Re: “City Reveals Maggie Walker Statue Plans

A good part of the year, that tree is scrubbing carbon out of the atmosphere- carbon that is constantly coming out of the tailpipes of the buses and cars that go down Broad. It stocks it away in its physical structure, providing what is called an ecosystem service. The older and larger the tree gets, the more carbon it lays on and the more benefit it has. Not to mention the temperature moderation and beauty it provides. Go to Savannah and take in the beauty of entire blocks set aside for large trees and public seating. This is what Richmond needs. Not valueless landscaping that, given our city's past performance, will probably not be very well maintained. Put Maggie Walker in the median, like the other statues, where she can rise above the tree and it can provide a beautiful backdrop for her.
