“A Raisin in the Sun” at the November Theatre

Friday, Feb. 16 - March 11

This classic, Tony-nominated domestic drama by Lorraine Hansbury debuted in 1959 and changed the theater world. It was the first play written by a black woman to be produced on Broadway. “A Raisin in the Sun” follows the life of a family struggling in a Chicago slum as they attempt to change their lives in the wake of an insurance payout following a death in the family. This Richmond production is being directed by Tawnya Pettiford-Wates and stars in her local debut Tony Award-winner Trazana Beverly (Broadway’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf”) as Lena “Mama” Younger, with Katrinah Carol Lewis as Ruth Younger. The seminal work is being performed by Virginia Repertory Theatre as part of the Acts of Faith Festival. Opens Feb. 16 and runs through March 11. For times and tickets, see va-rep.org.
