Re: “Footlights: Illuminating the Richmond theater Scene

I've debated this topic recently, with myself and with others. I'm not sure that I agree that Jewish themes aren't better informed by Jewish craftsmen. I certainly disagree with Keith Fitzgerald's statement that Judaism is less a religious experience and more a culture experience for some people? What people would those be? Certainly not Jewish people.

I'm sure I could direct August Wilson's plays or "Raisin in the Sun" satisfactorily but research alone might not inform my choices as well as having lived in that particular culture. You could argue that Linda Hunt made a convincing man in "The Year of Living Dangerously" but I might counter that Marlon Brando was a pretty ridiculous Asian in "Teahouse of the August Moon".

Actors might be able to assimilate better than the director who has nothing but research to inform his choices. However, as one of my Jewish friends reminded me: "If Jews started getting sensitive about our stuff getting culturally appropriated, Christians and Muslims wouldn't have a religion!"

Re: “The Builders

I reject the premise of this story. "The city ... was built on the destruction and enslavement of blacks." Seriously? Richmond was an established city and capitol of the Commonwealth long before slave traders moved in. The slave trade has certainly added to the infamy of this city but by no means "built" it. Your theme of racism is valid sir, but the vehicle of your rant is misplaced and unattractively opportunist.

Re: “Exile on Grace Street

I went to VCU 75-79, saw lots at the Biograph, snuck into the Lee Art, bought bongs at Sandoors, walked quicky past Hababba's and ate too much at the Village on the corner. Saw Dan Folgelberg at Back Door. Lived in Johnson Hall and ate it all up.
