This whole styleweekly article is a total fabrication - there have been several diaries published over the years by Union shoulders who were imprisoned there and not one mentions any mistreatment - in fact originally The prison was for Union officers only but at some point they imprisoned enlisted men there but because the island was a very short distance from a high populated residential area of Richmond they closed the Prison for fear of a mass escape. It is criminal how the north much more guilty of war crimes and mistreatment of prisoners (Elmira and Chicago) has continued 150 years after the war to demonize the South
