Re: “Jail Bluff Riles Critics

If the Mayor would only make it clear to RPS Supt. Brandon and her pet school board members that our first priority ought to be getting kids educated, then there would be no need to build such a hot mess of a jail.

Jones says he cares about kids, but he hasn't done one single thing that shows that. And, puh-leeze do not get me started on "the new schoools" .......Nothing has been done there other than shoveling the ceremonial bunch of dirt.

Re: “The Jail Break

Didn't the Croson decision make set-asides illegal? How are they getting away with the minority participation requirement in the first place?

He reminds me of a spoiled rich-kid brat. He needs to grow up before he tries to sit at the grown-ups table.

Re: “Times-Dispatch Cuts 20 Jobs

Silvestri needs to understand that the disrespect he repeatedly demonstrates will come back to haunt him. Even if these cuts were necessary, the manner in which they were done reeks of high-handed, cold-hearted paternalism.

Re: “The 2011 Power List

Yawn ..... Style needs to get a new definition of power. Your list, reflective of the "power of the purse," fails to examine other ways power is made manifest in our city and region. For example: who was the individual at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts responsible for making sure all the work was done in accordance with the details of the renovation plans, which ER doctor [and team] saved the most number of lives, which firefighter [and team] managed to put out the greatest number of fires, which judge decided the most far-reaching and diverse number of cases, what broadcast/radio news station has the greatest number of viewers/listeners, which organization gave the most amount of food to the Food Bank, which philanthropist gave the most money to the community, which high school [and individual student] contributed the greatest number of hours to community service .... I could go on an on .... but, I think you get the idea. I wholeheartedly agree with City taxpayer here when s/he points out the deficit of leadership in relationship to "positional power." What good is power if it is only a "title" and you do nothing positive with it?

Re: “Comcast Sues City, Wants Tax Refund

Has anything other than ceremonial dirt been turned over on these schools?

There were supposed to be four schools being built, BUT now there are only TWO. You can look it up.

Of course, the bids by the various contractors are not made are the Mayor's "discretion," but there appear to have been bids made with his "encouragement."

The "awards" of contracts in response to bids by contractors are supposed to be determined by an impartial panel. We shall have to wait and see how impartial that 11-member panel actually is.

As to the appearance of a conflict of interest between the actions of Preacher Jones and those of Mayor Jones, it is perhaps not uncoincidental that the same company is potentially on the receiving end of the both the city's and the church's largesse. It is also not uncoincidental that there are so many people on the city payroll now who also attend his church.

Re: “The Score

The COC (Chamber of Commerce) $125 charge should have netted a -125 instead of a zero i.e!!!!!!!#@! Or, they could have asked for $125 worth of food for the homeless .... oh, but wait ... the COC and Tom Silvestri don't want anyone to think Richmond has any real problems ....
