Thanks for the story on the Survivor Day program. While a meltdown at any of the power stations is very unlikely, much of the central Virginia region is in the 50-mile emergency planning zone for both power stations.

While this requires different planning than what is needed within the 10-mile emergency planning zones, there are plans in place to help guide the public and share information if there were to be an emergency at either site. While the major impacts would be localized like you noted, all of the local emergency managers definitely understand the wider need to make sure everyone knows what to do and we practice these plans alongside the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the localities where these facilities are located.

We are working to hold another survivor day within the Central Virginia area in May.

We’ll all be there to help in an emergency, but it sure helps the overall process if everyone has just that little bit of know-how to be better prepared until help arrives.
