Rabid Raccoon Attacks at Lewis Ginter

Animal "dispatched" after brief battle.

A rabid raccoon launched a sneak attack on an unnamed woman walking the grounds of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Henrico on Saturday, according to the state health department. The two engaged in a brief battle. The woman won.

Here’s how the health department tells the story:

The raccoon ran out of the woods near the path where she was walking and began to scratch and claw her leg. The raccoon then began to bite her leg and the citizen was able to dispatch the raccoon. The individual is undergoing post-exposure treatment which includes receiving the rabies vaccine. Post-exposure vaccination is extremely effective in preventing rabies.

Health department officials say they want to hear from anyone else who may have “been exposed” to the animal. Call 804-501-4529.
