Dancer Annielille Gavino Kollman is a blazing, cheerful force of nature.

Born in the Philippines, she moved to New York City at 19, trained with the Alvin Alley Company and other leading artists before moving to Richmond where she joined the Latin Ballet.

In the past couple of years she’s launched her own company, Malayaworks. (Malaya is the Tagalog word for “freedom.” It is also the name of her precocious young daughter who is frequently featured in her work.) Her new “Spoken Movement” is the latest collection of her socially-aware works. Other artists, notably alt-art rockers My Darling Fury, and dance companies Clave Unidos and Johnnie Mercer and the Red Project are adding their talents to her vision.

The expression of complex ideas and emotions through disciplined movement is perhaps the most abstract of the arts. There are depths of meaning and intent in Kollman’s work that the charming poetry of the performance illuminates rather than obscures.

“Spoken Movement” takes place at Dogtown Dance Theater, Saturday March 7 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission/$15 student.
