Virginia Commonwealth University screens the first film for its 2019 Cinematheque, and it’s a doozy: the meditative 1972 sci-fi masterpiece by legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, “Solaris.” Yes, the Soviet answer to Kubrick and Clarke’s “2001:” Or as a former Richmonder in Moscow says: “Groovy Soviet ’70s leather jackets and mesh shirts, a planet that is a living organism scanning the minds of all who come close, and a journey deep into the nature of memory and existence. … It’s said that Tarkovsky initially want to have the entire movie take place not on a spaceship but in one apartment in Moscow.” The film is free and open to the public. 7 p.m. icavcu.org.
