The Sistine Chapel. The Taj Mahal. What those landmarks are to painting and architecture, New Orleans’ Preservation Hall is to jazz. It’s a highly sacred space – photos and videos are prohibited at its nightly 45-minute performances – and it has provided generations of music fans a unique opportunity to tap into the core of America’s greatest art form.

Fortunately for Richmonders, you don’t have to travel all the way to Saint Peter Street in the French Quarter to hear the sounds of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band firsthand. The perpetually regenerating ensemble, which features seasoned veterans and exciting new instrumentalists alike, is making an afternoon stop at the University of Richmond’s Camp Concert Hall on Sunday as part of a tour celebrating 60 years of jazz at Preservation Hall.

If you’re imagining the group’s mission to preserve and personify tradition results in a dated listening experience, think again. These days the band is led by the Oberlin College-trained bassist Ben Jaffe, son of co-founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, and each set he directs is filled with the boundless exuberance of New Orleans itself. The group even has a new album out — a collection titled “89″ featuring Charlie Gabriel, the clarinetist, saxophonist and flutist whose nearly 80-year career as a jazz musician includes a stint with Preservation Hall dating back to 2006.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will perform at the University of Richmond’s Camp Concert Hall on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $5 (for University of Richmond students) to $35. Tickets can be purchased at tickets.modlin.richmond.edu.
