Calling Mark O’Connor a bluegrass fiddler is accurate, but it is woefully incomplete. The mostly Americana-centric violinist, who appears this Friday with his wife Maggie at Hopewell’s Beacon Theatre, has played with a who’s who of the musical world, from Dolly Parton to Yo Yo Ma. His recordings have won multiple Grammys and Country Music Awards. Violin is not his only instrument; he is also widely recorded on guitar and mandolin. His work ranges from blazing variations on traditional music to large-scale classical compositions. He has established his own youth violin education approach aggressively and controversially competitive with the dominant Suzuki method. He has an affinity for the edges of genre definitions, and the virtuosity to have appeared as a leader or sideman on over five hundred recordings. For the past 10 years he has been collaborating with his violinist/singer wife on classical duets, in the Mark O’Connor band, and finally as a double act singing songs they created together over the pandemic. The result, mostly casting Maggie as lead vocalist and violinist, and Mark on harmony vocal, guitar and violin, was released in 2023 as “Life After Life [Omac Records].”
Mark and Maggie O’Connor play the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell on Friday Nov. 8. Doors are at: 6:30 p.m. Tickets range from $27-$50.
