Pick: Jessica Pavone at Artspace and University of Richmond

New York-based violinist, violist and experimental composer has two shows in Richmond this week.

New York-based violist, violinist and composer Jessica Pavone first gained attention in the early years of the century as a frequent collaborator with eminence grise of the avant-garde Anthony Braxton. Like her frequent collaborator, guitarist Mary Halvorson, she combines jazz improvisation with modern chamber compositions to create music that is at one lilting and spikey. The result, when she performed at the Firehouse Theatre a few years ago, was music that was quietly transfixing.

This time around, she is performing on successive nights in Richmond. The first, at Artspace on Oct. 15, opens with a solo set from Virginia Commonwealth University jazz percussionist Tony Martucci, a veteran and very original drummer who has played with a who’s who of modern greats. The Artspace event is a rare Tuesday evening edition of RVA-based Out of Your Head Record’s Second Monday series.

The following night, in the first edition of an aspiring new series with the University of Richmond Harnett Museum, she appears with a trio featuring Out of Your Head principals bassist Adam Hopkins and drummer Scott Clark. For those who like adventurous music (and the numbers at these events seem to be growing) this is an opportunity to see a high wire act by a unique artist. Consider that both an enticement and a warning.

Jessica Pavone on solo viola and Tony Martucci solo drums perform at Artspace on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Doors are at 7:30 p.m., music at 8 p.m. Admission is $15.

Jessica Pavone trio, with Adam Hopkins and Scott Clark, perform at the Harnett Museum in the University of Richmond Modlin Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Admission is free.
