PICK: Doors at Eight series at Black Iris on Wednesday nights

This week features local jazz drummer Scott Clarke and Laura Ann Singh.

It should be no surprise that Peter LeBlanc’s Doors at Eight series on Wednesday nights at The Black Iris is off to a roaring start. LeBlanc was behind killer shows at The Hof over the past couple of years and booked a lot of great acts as music director at Brambly Park when the pandemic forced things outdoors.

In the first month of the new series, he’s hosted sets from nationally famous bassist, Dezron Douglas, as well as from Richmond-based all-stars Charles Owens, Sam Reed, and Ayinde Williams. A new month kicks off on Feb. 2 with two sets from adventurous drummer Scott Clark. The first involves duets with Miramar’s Laura Ann Singh focusing on Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi. The second introduces his new band.

Then next week – on Feb. 9 – it’s a double header from Butcher Brown multi-instrumentalist and rapper Marcus Tenney’s Tennishu band and guitarist Steven Boone. Saxophonist Nate Clark, who some may recognize from Plan 9 Music, plays on Feb. 16. And the short month closes out with a trio led by one of the city’s most ubiquitous musicians – drummer/vocalist Kelli Strawbridge – known for his work with Mekong Express, Big Payback, Kings, Prabir, and on the Hustle Season podcast.

But this week it’s Scott Clark and company at the Black Iris, performing at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
