PICK: An Evening with Lonnie Holley: Film, Talk and Performance at VMFA

Thursday, Sept. 26

An amazingly intuitive visual artist and musician, Lonnie Holley will be appearing at Leslie Cheek Theatre this Thursday for a screening of the recent Sundance film, “I Snuck Off the Slave Ship” at 6 p.m.

The Alabama native’s visceral work, which emerged in the 1980s via sculptures of sandstone carvings and found object assemblage, has been acquired by the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, as well as being displayed at the White House.

Following the film, Holley will talk about his art as well as play his spellbinding music (think if Sun Ra had been a folk musician) until 7:30 p.m. Costs $5-$8. vmfa.museum.

Here’s a brief video interview Style Weekly Editor Brent Baldwin conducted with Holley in 2013 during a memorable Paradise of Bachelors Hopscotch day party in Raleigh, NC. Holley performed that day with Pelt, Steve Gunn, Spacin’, Daniel Bachman, Birds of Maya and others.
