Seven children are now fatherless following a shooting that occurred on Decatur Street late last month. Vigils for both men involved, 38-year-old Randy Smith Jr. and 21-year-old Jayquan Powell, took place this past weekend.
Friends and family gathered Sunday afternoon at the scene of the shooting to honor Smith. Dozens turned out Saturday evening in Fairfield Court to honor Powell.
Citizens Against Crime founder Alicia Rasin presided over both vigils. “Where is the love,” she repeated at each event. “Where is the love?”
Richmond police public information officer James Mercante says the department is still investigating the incident, and that only Powell’s death has been labeled a homicide.
Both men were laid to rest Monday.
