When the leaves change, writers and their events seem to crawl out of the woodwork. Kicking off a string of local literary events, the superhero of the comic essay, David Sedaris, returns Oct. 6 to the Landmark Theatre to read from his newest book, “When You Are Engulfed in Flames.”
On his heels the versatile and critically acclaimed Dominican author, Julia Alvarez, will speak at Deep Run High School Oct. 7, compliments of Henrico County Public Library.
The James River Writers Conference, one of Richmond's signature events, now in its sixth year, takes place Oct. 10-11 at the Library of Virginia, featuring an array of agents, editors and authors including David Baldacci, Kate Jacobs and Taylor Antrim (full disclosure: I serve on conference's board of directors).
