Oumar Konate at Balliceaux

Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 p.m.

Oumar Konate’s Malian power trio is at once hauntingly traditional and explosively modern. The songs may be infused with sub-Saharan folk rather than Delta blues, and Konate may sing in a language few here understand, but the surface differences ultimately seem trivial. Western music — rock, soul, jazz, hip-hop and pop — has been resonating back and forth between the continents for the past half-century. It should be no surprise to hear a young guitarist shift between guitar heroics and sinuous restraint. If Jimi Hendrix had grown up along the Niger in the mud-walled metropolis of Gao listening to the Bad Brains’ “I Against I,” the result might have been something like this. Konate and his trio play Balliceaux on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 p.m. Admission is $7. balliceauxrva.com.
