Open Doors, Open Hearts

Philly Vegan and six other Black-owned restaurants offer pay-what-you-can this week.

Philly Vegan owner Samuel Veney proves that while you may not be able to control the price of eggs, the tenor of the weather or the opinions of your neighbors, you can control how much good you put out into the world.

Veney has been offering a once-a-month, pay-what-you-can (PWYC) option at his Hull Street restaurant for as long as they’ve been in business [for takeaway only].

This week, in honor of Black History Month, Philly Vegan is teaming up with six other Black-owned restaurants to host three days of PWYC.

Participants include Croaker’s Spot (1020 Hull St.), Urban Hang Suite (304 E Broad St.), Charles’ Kitchen (10835 W Broad St.), Inner City Blues (3015 Nine Mile Road), Mama J’s (415 N 1st St.), The Original Ronnie’s BBQ (2097 New Market Road) and Philly Vegan (1126 Hull St.).

Emmanuel Logan is in charge of cooking Ronnie’s mac-and-cheese.

“The interesting part is that they already do this stuff [unofficially],” says Veney of his generous cohorts. “If they have someone who comes in who can’t pay for their meal, they take care of them.”

Veney says that in addition to the award-winning vegan eats at his own restaurant, there will also be PWYC vegan and vegetarian options at Charles’ Kitchen, Urban Hang Suite and The Original Ronnie’s BBQ.

“Being able to do this is an organized, unified way—we do have the power to be the change we want to see in our communities,” says Veney.
