One Small Step for a Country Club, One Giant Leap for Womankind

The venerable Country Club of Virginia has started to allow women to join its board of directors.

Women have been allowed to be full members of the club since 1908, says William “Skip” Harris,” the club’s general manager. None has yet joined the board, he says, as the nomination and voting process “would unfold later.”

Was the decision sparked by the controversial debate about the admission of women into the Augusta National Golf Club? “Not at all,” Harris says.

Members made the change, he says, “because we wanted to. You have to evolve.” — M.S.S.
