Of Montreal at the National

Sunday, Jan. 31.

For all the conceptual strangeness that Of Montreal brainchild Kevin Barnes exudes — from his makeup-clad, effeminate attire to the establishment of his lyrical alter-ego, a middle-aged, black transsexual named Georgie Fruit — the colorfully kaleidoscopic frontman has tapped into something that hasn't been this curiously bizarre in popular music since David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. Delivering a sugary hybrid of glam rock, experimental R&B, psychedelia and sex funk, Of Montreal's manic pop vignettes are at once escapist genius and surrealist audio overload. Sure to bring plenty of asexual gender bending, as well as a few songs off its forthcoming album, the tentatively titled “False Priest,” Of Montreal plays the National on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. $20-$25. 612-1900.

(Note: This show was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30.)
