North Side Claims a Fourth Governor

Thanks so much for the beautiful job on my neighborhood (“The North Side,” Cover Story, March 7). The photos were great, particularly the cover, the block which has the last row of elms as the entire street once had. Edwin Slipek Jr.’s article was written as only a native can, with sensitivity and intimate details.

There was a fourth governor from Ginter Park who was a less-remembered but more tragic figure than the other three, from what I have read. James Hubert Price, who lived at 3900 Seminary (corner of Claremont) from 1926 until 1943, with time out for the Executive Mansion, was Gov. Pollard’s lieutenant governor and governor from 1938 to 1942.

He was more progressive than Pollard in proposing anti-Depression measures but ran into opposition from the Byrd machine and others who felt he wasn’t anti-Byrd enough. Though his legislative program of 1940 failed, the 1942 General Assembly passed almost all of it after he was out of office. His wife died in the Jefferson Hotel fire of March 1944.
