Nobunny, the Hussy, the Nervous Ticks and Diamond Hairbrush at Strange Matter

Sunday, Feb. 9. 9 p.m.

The party sound San Franciscan Justin Champlin has perfected since 2001 as Nobunny is Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs spiked with junkyard punkiness and Cody Chesnutt soul. It’s an assimilation that Jack White parlayed into mainstream success with the White Stripes, but Champlin’s brew is less streamlined and more combustible. Nobunny’s latest release, “Reflections from the Ear Mirror,” is seriously convivial listening. Tunes such as “Bye, Bye Roxie,” “Do the Stooge” and his Hasil Adkins take on the Kids of Widney High classic “Pretty Girls,” burst from the speakers like it’s the last day of school. And with a no-holds-barred, straight-from-the-thrift-store stage show to match the fun-filled intensity of his music, this is the show of the week. Nobunny plays Sunday, Feb. 9, at Strange Matter with the Hussy, the Nervous Ticks and Diamond Hairbrush. Doors open at 9 p.m. for the 18 and older show. Tickets are $10. strangematterrva.com.
