New Year’s Eve Roundup ’24

For those who haven't decided yet, a look at some Dec. 31 events.

“What are you doing New Year’s Eve” is more than the title of a corny ‘70s song, it’s also a legit consideration around this time. Whether you look forward to the noisemakers and ridiculous hats of a blowout party or prefer to celebrate in a more low-key atmosphere, you can trust Richmond to provide plenty of options. In the immortal words of author Phyllis McGinley, “Stir the eggnog, lift the toddy. Happy New Year, everybody!”

Say farewell

Party the new year in and say farewell to Kabana Rooftop, which is closing its doors after almost nine years, all in one night. The black-tie affair offers indoor and outdoor partying, complimentary appetizer stations, a midnight toast and music by Polo Brown and Ren Miles. And how could you bid adieu to Kabana without a couple of full-service cash bars and live DJs? 9 p.m., Kabana Rooftop, 700 East Main St. Tickets

Get dressed up

Party like the crash of ’29 never happened at the NYE Gatsby Gala at Harry’s at the Hoffheimer. Forget Prohibition, the booze will be flowing, so don your best 1920s glamour to dance to the Grace Street Seven, a swingin’ seven-piece jazz band, and to compete in a swing dance-off. There will also be a vintage costume contest, themed 1920s cocktails, light hors d’oeuvres, beats by DJ Ghozt and a midnight toast. 8 p.m., the Hoffheimer, 2828 W. Broad Street. Tickets

Put on your gothic finery, leather pants or fetish wear, then head to Fallout VA for their New Year’s Eve Masque and dance into 2025 with DJ Scareypete and DJ Jackie to industrial, goth, new wave, EBM and electronica. Enjoy cage dancers, a snack buffet and midnight toast before heading to the photo booth to document your night. If so inclined, check out the sober special, a deal offering all you can drink of non-alcoholic sparkling cider, soda waters, sodas, iced tea and bottled water for $12. 8 p.m., Fallout, 117 N. 18th St. Tickets

Usher in the New Year at the Third Annual Time Traveler’s Ball, where past, present, and future collide in a celebration of time. Dress as your favorite historical or fictional character to add to the mix. Corey El & The Fam provide the music to get you moving, while the open bar and snack buffet featuring foods of all eras will keep you going. 8 p.m. Révéler Experiences, 3108 W. Cary St. Tickets

Follow your jam

If there’s nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile, consider Hardywood’s New Year’s Eve with Suggesting Rhythm, RVA’s own Grateful Dead tribute band. You can count on grooving music, drinks flowing and good vibes to shake it, shake it into the new year. Get your ticket in advance and save five bucks. 8 p.m., Hardywood, 2410 Ownby Lane. Tickets

Not into all the hullabaloo? Uninterested in dressing up to celebrate? Spend New Year’s Eve at the National taking in progressive bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters. Live performances have become the band’s main focus so they’re likely to take the audience into 2025 with their long improvisational and instrumental jams, dancing optional. 8 p.m., The National, 708 E. Broad St. Tickets

For a time-honored RVA tradition, you can spend the lead-up to 2025 listening to the soothing AM gold classics of the ‘70s and ‘80s at NYE with Three Sheets to the Wind at the Broadberry. Think Huey Lewis, Billy Joel, Chrsitopher Cross, basically all the cheesy clichéd music that, for whatever reason, seems to still resonate with audiences born decades after it was Top 40 material. 7 p.m., The Broadberry, 2731 W. Broad St. Tickets

If it’s an Afro-Caribbean shindig you crave, look no further than Ember Music Hall. They’ll have Virginia’s best Caribbean DJs (JR Mixx, Killa Khan and DJ Sniper) on the ones and twos, spinning reggae, Soca, Afrobeats and hip-hop to keep you moving all night long. Fuel up with Caribbean cuisine and drinks to pregame for the ball drop and midnight toast. 9 p.m., Ember Music Hall, 309 East Broad St. Tickets

Step into a time machine for New Year’s Eve 1992 at the Get Tight Lounge. Your ticket gets you a midnight toast and ball drop, along with all the ‘90s music –think Lemonheads, Prince and Soundgarden—your grunge-stained heart could wish for. Pro tip: small venue, likely to sell out, so grab tickets early if you’re hoping to party like we did when the first Bush was president. 8 p.m., Get Tight Lounge, 1104 W. Main Street. Tickets

Assorted themes

If the thought of staying up until midnight is just too much, you may want to celebrate New Year’s Eve with the Brits for a short and sweet observance. As the fireworks go off around Big Ben, celebrate 2025 with champagne and other Anglophiles eager to be home early. But be smart and reserve a table ahead of time. 6 p.m. The British Embassy, 1116 East Main Street. 804-866-2838
