There’s no big news in Tastemakers this week, but we did sniff out a tidbit that slipped past our noses recently.
Though not quite the Kuba Kuba of South Side, there’s a nifty little Latin restaurant/grocery nestled there on Hull Street Road called La Milpa, which opened in mid-December.
Claiming to be “your best connection to Latin America,” La Milpa’s menu offers plenty of the standard meat-and/or beans-in-a-tortilla dishes. But there are some real surprises, too, like the stomach stew for instance. That’s certainly a surprising dish for around here. But not in Latin America, where it’s commonly known as menudo. Like the Mexican boy band.
Menudo, not like the band, but like chicken soup, is thought to be good for you when you’re sick. Some even consider it a surefire cure for even the hairiest hangover. Is it the high iron content?
If that kind of thing fries your tortilla, look for other interesting dishes, such as the tacos de lengua (tongue), de tripa (tripe) and de barbacoa (barbecue). La Milpa also offers grilled sandwiches, fried fish and a couple of vegetarian options.
Since the place doubles as a grocery store and has an expert staff on hand to help, you’ll be able to make everything you see on the menu at home. La Milpa is open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. every day. 6925 Hull Street Road. 276-3391.
