New Challenge for Choreographer

The other premieres on the program are both solos — a rare occurrence in Foster’s work. “Undone,” a Richmond premiere created for and performed by VCU dance professor James Frazier, explores the emotional harm caused by regret. Foster says the challenge for her as the choreographer and Frazier as the dancer was the difference in their body types — not to mention that Foster kept all of Frazier’s movement contained in a 12-foot-by-12-foot space on the stage.

Senior company member Rai Anne Larkins performs the second solo, “Tuesday in May,” which Foster says helped her come to grips with the recent death of her father. In discussing the challenges of her recent work, Foster pauses and says, “A lot of things in my life lately make me feel like I’ve really grown up.” — Lea Marshall
