In conjunction with the Marsh Art Gallery exhibition, the Reynolds Gallery has organized a companion show, “Nell Blaine Watercolors, Intimate Views: Riverside Drive, Anse Galet Valley, Gloucester, and Acherkogel.” The 21 paintings in the show are landscapes of four locales Blaine inhabited in her 50-year career. Although the Reynolds Gallery has shown Blaine’s art many times, this is the first grouping of solely watercolors. Ranging from 1962 to 1995, these intimate views reveal Blaine’s profoundly personal relationship with her environment, whether from a cottage in Gloucester, Mass., a chalet in Austria, a banana plantation in St. Lucia, or the New York apartment window on Riverside Drive.

Bev Reynolds, the owner of Reynolds Gallery, was a close friend of Blaine’s, who died in 1996. In the catalog that accompanies the Marsh Art Gallery exhibition, Reynolds writes of her visits and conversations with Blaine at the artist’s New York apartment. Reynolds reflects, “Looking at a painting of white Casa Blanca lilies that Nell had just finished the night before, I was struck again by the sense of total immersion and synthesis of the gestures and rhythms that came together to form this painting … Perhaps because Nell was limited in her mobility, there is always a intimacy in her viewpoint — a close perspective that gives the feeling of experiencing the moment along with her.”

“Nell Blaine Watercolors” will offer the viewer a chance to share this intimate view so deeply felt and conveyed by the artist. Moreover, the concentration on her watercolor works will demonstrate Blaine’s virtuosic brushwork as revealed through the spontaneity and freshness so conducive to the medium. The show will open on April 6 with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. and will continue to May 12.
