If you have to get your instrumental funk on, you can rest assured that if the band is from New Orleans, there’s a better-than-average chance of freeing your ass. Naughty Professor, which plays Wednesday, Jan. 14, in the intimate confines of the Balliceaux back room, embodies the more jazz-influenced party culture of the Big Easy with six talented musicians bringing the heady funk. Horns blister and build over taut, swirling rhythms on songs such as “Knockwurst,” “Six Paper Joint” and “Chef’s Revenge.” The music isn’t as traditional as say, the Meters, but if you lean more toward the jazz funk of Snarky Puppy or Galactic, this will be your show of the week.
