Pop-punk outfit Motion City Soundtrack burst onto the music scene more than a decade ago with its breakout hit single, “The Future Freaks Me Out.” The band’s debut, “I Am the Movie,” led to a tour through Europe and Japan with Blink-182, where that band’s bassist, Mark Hoppus, took a liking to the group and agreed to produce its next album — the successful “Commit This to Memory.” What followed was a blur of Warped Tour dates, a European tour with OK Go, two more Top 20 albums and a new legion of fans. The group’s forthcoming fifth studio album, “Go,” is set to be released June 12, and its first single, “True Romance,” already has fans getting Motion sickness. Motion City Soundtrack is no stranger to Richmond — drummer Tony Thaxton and bassist Matthew Taylor are both natives. The group is working with Mad Dragon Records to curate a series of 7-inch single releases by emerging artists, one of which is Richmond’s own Goldrush. Motion City Soundtrack performs with Kid Is Qual and the Trillions at the National on Thursday, May 17, at 8 p.m. $15-$18. 612-1900.
