Most Expensive House for Sale

After a few years of legal tussle prompted by a divorce, followed by an auction and a dispute over ownership, Windemere is back on the market. Windemere’s previous owner, Betty Brown, successfully reclaimed the estate from its auction buyers in 2011. After putting some work into it, Brown put the English Tudor up for sale again last May, listing agent Lucy Williams says. “It’s gorgeous,” she says. “It’s one of the true estates in the city.” The nearly 11,000-square-foot house at 5501 Cary Street Road was built in the 1800s as a hunting lodge and served as a temporary home for Gov. Jim Gilmore in the late 1990s. It sits on 3 acres, with a pool, gardens and a to-die-for kitchen. Asking price? $4.2 million.
