More bad news for HDL

Yet another lawsuit for troubled health firm

Richmond’s one-time high technology champ, Health Diagnostic Laboratory Inc., has been through a storm of bad news since last summer.

It is under investigation by the federal government for possible kickbacks to physicians who use its health testing products, its star=quality CEO and founder Tonya Mallory resigned in September. Then, Connecticut-based Cigna Health and Life Insurance Co. sued HDL,claiming it had defrauded it of $84 million. HDL denies the charge.

Now, BlueWave Healthcare Consultants Inc. of Birmingham, ALa. has sued HDL for $205 million after HDL terminated its contract with BlueWave.

BlueWave had sold HDL products in several Southern states and has been founded by former sales associates of Mallory, who had shepherded HDL’s spectacular growth from its founded in 2008 to last year.

It’s apparent HDL’s new leader, Joe McConnell, who replaced Mallory, is retrenching. Stay tuned.
