An ’80s synth-rock band fighting ninjas with over-the-top stunts and cringe-worthy dialogue? The 1987 film “Miami Connection” has all the makings of the perfect bad movie. It’s directed by and stars author, inspirational speaker and ninth degree black belt Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, who lost everything when the film originally tanked. It tells the story of the martial arts rock band Dragon Sound facing off against a band of motorcycle ninjas that’s tightened its grip on Florida’s narcotics trade. The film remained unseen for decades until Texas’ Drafthouse Films restored it for release in 2012, screening it at festivals across the country where it’s become a midnight movie sensation. Grandmaster Kim, who will appear at the Richmond screening, is the founder of eight Richmond Martial Arts World schools with thousands of students. He’s also the recipient of Y.K.
