Spagnoli also chose the 10 artists for “Casting a New Light,” a collection of photographic works at 1708 Gallery rendered in the tongue-tangling techniques of our intrepid forebears. After a stint in Richmond and Charlottesville, “Casting a New Light” will travel the nation through next year. But that’s the future. For now, check out the past with a traveling reception Sept. 2, starting with talks by Spagnoli and Shlaer at the Visual Arts Center, 6-8 p.m., followed by a reception at 1708, 8-10 p.m. Or convey yourself to a preview and artists’ talk Sept. 1, 6-8 p.m. at 1708. — Brandon Reynolds
