Data analysts at Slate and The Trace have made it easier to see how much gun violence has occurred right outside your doorstep.

The news organizations compiled data from the Gun Violence Archive into an interactive map that details the location of fatal and nonfatal shootings.

The Gun Violence Archive is a nonprofit formed in 2013, which provides statistics on gun related violence in the United States well ahead of federal numbers. The data spans from Dec. 5, 2014 to Dec. 5, 2015.

To use the map, key in an address or city, or hit “locate yourself.” The map zooms in to pinpoint the shootings and provides such details as exact location and outcome.

A quick search for Richmond reveals that the Gilpin Court housing project has experienced the highest number of shootings, at 14, within the measured time frame. Data shows that one in the 1100 block of St. John Street was fatal.

Analysts also write that despite the recent uptick in mass shootings, in 2013 — the most recent year that gun violence statistics are available from the federal government — fewer than 2 percent of the more than 33,000 gun deaths in the country were attributed to mass shootings. Statistics also show that every 12 months, more than 130,000 people are shot.
