If you ever wondered what Kate Bush would have sounded like if she played with the Avett Brothers, wonder no longer. Luray is as close to that musical marriage as you can get. Fronted by banjo-playing singer Shannon Carey, the group’s ethereal Americana floats ghostlike in barren spaces. The falling-leaves approach actuates Carey’s tranquilizing space oddities in a push pull of melancholic anticipations and fawning inveiglements. The outward, post-bluegrass introspection presents itself as hopeful daydreams tangled up in blue, but the band’s lugubrious pursuits never wallow in quiet resignation.
