In “The Realness”, the columnist begins with a description of “The Real Babymamas of Richmond” reality show. He goes on to say that while he isn’t a follower of the show, that he does “commend the ladies on their effort.” Effort.

I am a mother of two young, school-aged boys. There is no disputing that in order to be a “real” mother (I happen to be married which adds two more hands) in our culture and society today it takes all hands on deck. I know that if were to be on a reality show discussing my lifestyle, plight, challenges etc., I would be away from my kids. Is this the best way for these women to spend their extra time?

Even with a spouse to help me and provide something that I never can (fatherhood). I’m here to tell you that it is the toughest job I have ever had. I think it is time that we glorify women who not only stay home with but who raise their kids. Our children deserve this.

There is a trend today to glorify and build up single motherhood. I think that this is a tragedy for the kids. If a woman finds herself in this position, she needs support from her community or family. Maybe the family support does not exist? All the more reason to be at home doing the most difficult job out there.
