I am appalled by the actions of both the mayor and the City Council of Richmond. They are more attentive to build a Class A baseball stadium for a second-class baseball team than to replace an Fairfield School, an aging, dilapidated elementary school that is both a safety hazard and a health hazard to the children who attend there.

The same city government preferred to build a new penal facility than build a new school. After all, locking up prisoners in a far better housing facility than they normally live in when they have their freedom is far better than improving the education facilities and buildings for the young minds that are the future.

The irony of the whole situation is the good citizens think nothing of it and continue to elect the same do-nothing people to be their governmental leaders. Get real, Mayor Dwight Jones and council members. Until you have a class-act ball team, spend the money on what’s needed for the city. If the team wants a new stadium, then let it build it. If it threatens to leave, oh well, there are other sport venues. Haven’t you spent enough money on sports attractions that haven’t panned out?
