Don’t let the valet parking intimidate you. The recently opened Lava restaurant and lounge out at Innsbrook is approachable. “Approachable” is one of the buzz words co-owner Bobby Dervishian uses to describe his new restaurant. Dervishian was once a part owner of Patina Grill at Short Pump, known for its daring world cuisine. “We’re doing an approachable world fusion menu,” Dervishian says of Lava. “I’m trying be a little less creative than out at Patina. [Lava] is more about comfort foods.” Don’t get the wrong impression; the food at Lava is very interesting. The menu — with items such as seared tuna with soba noodles in an Asian drizzle, and the house-cured pork chops with pumpkin mash — speaks for itself. Housed in the former Expressions, Lava contains a dance floor, a raised bar area that seats 50, a dining area and the lounge. The lounge “seems to be everybody’s favorite spot,” Dervishiam says. “Everyone picks up their drinks and goes off into [that area]. We call it everything from the smoking room to the pimp lounge.” Lava, as you might surmise from the name, has a fiery theme, with lava lamp columns and rich, warm colors. “It’s still a cafe-style room with an open dining area,” Dervishiam says, “but there’s a few hiding places.” Lava is open for lunch weekdays, dinner nightly.
