Maymont announced today that it has named Kathy Garrett-Cox as the new curator and director of historical resources and collections, which leads conservation and preservation efforts for Maymont’s historic resources. Among these are “the Mansion, carriages, and historic outbuildings and structures,” according to a press release. Garrett-Cox started Dec. 5.
“I am delighted to be at Maymont during this exciting time as we work to ensure Maymont’s resiliency for the next 100 years,” she tells Style via email. “Through the funding of a large [Economic Development Grant], Maymont Mansion will be receiving a new roof, upgraded HVAC systems and a fire suppression system. These are all necessary system upgrades that will ensure the preservation of the Mansion and its collection for years to come.”
The new director has two decades of experience “managing nationally significant historical resources — including the 11 properties of the Preservation Society of Newport County (Rhode Island), and over 300,000 artifacts at the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Facility.”
The press release noted that “she also brings in-depth knowledge of Maymont, where she served as manager of historical collections from 2006 to 2016.”
According to Melissa Abernathy, communications manager with the Maymont Foundation, while schools are out for Christmas break, the Maymont Mansion and Robins Nature Center will be open four extra days, Wednesday, Dec. 21 – Saturday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 28 – Sunday, Jan. 1. Note: Maymont will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25.
She notes that one can also “experience the festive pomp of a Victorian Christmas with a holiday audio tour of Maymont Mansion, or discover the wonders of the James River ecosystem at The Robins Nature. It’s fun for all ages, and advance registration* is recommended, due to capacity limits. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for children 12 and under, and free for Maymont members or anyone with an EBT card.”
