The nighttime sky lights up on America’s birthday. Here are some places to watch the sparks fly:
On July 3, Genworth Financial celebrates its 30th annual Independence Day concert by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, followed by fireworks. Festivities kick off at 6:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7:30. Fireworks at approximately 8:45. The event is free.
Brown’s Island plays host to RVA Fireworks on the James, also July 3, featuring a spectacular display over the river. The evening will feature music from SPARC, the Richmond Youth Symphony Orchestra and Richmond Ballet’s Minds in Motion. Entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks expected around 9:15. fireworksonthejames.com.
On July 4, Colonial Downs offers Racing to the Stars ‘n Stripes, an evening of horse races followed by fireworks and a family-themed after party with music from York River Concert Band and Proverbial. Racing starts at 5 p.m. Fireworks at 9:30. The cost ranges from $5-$20. colonialdowns.com.
Starting July 4, the Flying Squirrels play host to three nights of fireworks at The Diamond. Tickets start at $7. Games start Thursday at 6:35 p.m., Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Fireworks after each.
Dogwood Dell also will hold a fireworks show with live cannons and a concert featuring jazz from Simply Kevin B, the Carillon bells and the Richmond Concert Band. Entertainment starts at 5:45 p.m. Fireworks begin at dusk.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden holds an All-American celebration July 4 with free admission, music by the Happy Lucky Combo, WaterPlay and fun activities in the Children’s Garden. 1-4 p.m. lewisginter.org.
