A preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran and a Kerrville New Folk award winner are just a few ways to describe Americana singer and songwriter Jonathan Byrd. His shows bring together the Texas songwriting tradition with Southern storytelling and hot guitar picking in the vein of North Carolina greats Doc Watson and Tony Rice. After playing in numerous rock bands, Byrd hit the road solo in 2000 and performed new songs in an old folk style. Byrd’s latest release, 2010’s “Cackalack,” reached No. 22 on the Americana Music Association radio chart and ranked No. 3 on the folk DJ-L radio chart. Jonathan Byrd performs at Ashland Coffee and Tea on Friday, July 19, at 8 p.m. $10-$15. ashlandcoffeeandtea.com.
