It’s difficult to imagine what country music would be like had elder statesman George Jones not burst on the scene in 1955. Johnny Cash called him one of his favorite country singers, and not coincidentally, Jones is known for his emotionally intense songs dealing with pain, loss, grief and marital strife. Of course, Jones should be an expert by now after four marriages — even hitching up to country legend Tammy Wynette in the ’70s. His songs are often simple arrangements — no arena country sing-a-longs here — and with 143 Top 40 hits under his belt, you can be certain you’re getting a piece of musical history. The show is Sunday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Landmark Theater. Tickets start at $38. Call 262-8100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
