Melodic indie rocker Brice Woodall recently competed before a panel of 12 judges, including representatives from Billboard, BMI, Rolling Stone and Spin magazines, at the Northeast region of the Independent Music World Series held in October by Disc Makers at the Knitting Factory in New York City. At the end of the night, Woodall, backed by Steve Barber and Rich Stine (most recently of Fighting Gravity), took home first place (out of more than 1,000 bands) and over $35,000 in gear and prizes. Rocket Queen, Richmond’s Guns N’ Roses tribute band, recently dissolved onstage at the Canal Club in a whirl of epithets, and now frontman Chris Brown, the artist formerly known as Blaxl Rose, is singing with Richmond’s AC/DC tribute band Sin City.
Meanwhile over on Broad Street, Miguel Urbiztondo, co-owner of Sound of Music Studios, reports they’ve been busy with several projects of local and international note, including a new Gaskets (www.thegaskets.com) album featuring “lots of guest appearances.” Belgian band Mint has wrapped a recording that will be released in Europe with U.S. distribution in the works. Based on their blog pics (www.mint-o-matic.nu), these post-rockers are well-liked by the ladies. Local power-pop band The Rachel Nevadas (www.therachelnevadas.com) have been working on an EP with hints of “The Who/Kinks/Beatles,” says Urbiztondo.
