Single mother Karen Cooper, a Richmond mail carrier, says she was raised a Democrat and voted for Obama. But she became a Tea Party supporter after seeing little change after the election, including with race relations. “I am American first,” she says. “Black just happens to be my skin color.”
Photographer's note: There was a storm brewing on the horizon and I felt this perfectly fit the mood of the boisterous Tea Partiers, so I took Karen to the courtyard near her house and got the shot just before it started pouring.
