Anti-human-trafficking activists are lobbying Virginia to toughen up state laws against modern-day slavery.

The Richmond Justice Initiative wants the General Assembly to pass measures that would require strip clubs and other venues offering erotic entertainment to register with the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline so that victims of trafficking have a place to call for help.

Also being sought are requirements that the Virginia Department of Social Services offer help to trafficking victims, and that criminal trafficking laws cover people older than 16.

Style Weekly reported last year that clubs in Richmond had allegedly recruited women from Latin America to work in “gentlemen's clubs” in the Jefferson Davis Highway area.
