One of the toughest acts of any new parent unfortunately is one of the first: deciding what to name your child. Forward-thinking moms and dads, fully aware of the inevitable prepubescent teasing, tend to avoid monikers that might rhyme, have unfortunate spelling, or leave too much ambiguity in pronunciation. In the play “Honk!” nothing tops the unlucky name of its main character, Ugly. Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Ugly Duckling,” this popular children’s musical follows the story of an aesthetically challenged farmyard fowl while he searches for his mother. Winning the 2000 Olivier Award for best musical, beating out “The Lion King” and “Mamma Mia!” (take that, Abba), “Honk!” has various performances at Empire Theatre through May 15. $19-$34. 344-8040.
